Day 8: Stay Active (Even Indoors!) — Fun Winter Workouts for You and Your Dog

As the snow piles up and holiday treats take over, both you and your dog might feel like curling up on the couch. But staying active is one of the best gifts you can give each other this season. A little movement keeps joints healthy, digestion happy, and spirits high — especially during long, cozy winter days.

🐾 Movement Keeps You Both Merry

Exercise helps regulate your dog’s metabolism and prevents unwanted weight gain that often sneaks in during colder months. Even short bursts of play can make a big difference. If you’ve noticed your pup getting a bit sluggish, try spreading out small activity sessions throughout the day — 10 minutes here and there can really add up.

🏡 Indoor Activities for Snowy Days

  • Hide and Seek: Have your dog wait while you hide a few treats or toys around the house. Let them use their nose to find them — great mental and physical exercise!
  • Obstacle Course: Use pillows, boxes, and furniture to create a mini agility course. Cheer them on as they jump and weave through the setup.
  • Fetch in the Hallway: If you’ve got the space, a soft toy or ball works perfectly for a controlled game of indoor fetch.
  • DIY Tug Toy: Old t-shirts braided together make perfect tug ropes — eco-friendly and fun!

🧘‍♀️ Yoga (Yes, With Your Dog!)

“Doga” — yoga with your dog — isn’t just a cute idea; it’s an amazing bonding experience. While you stretch and breathe, your dog can mirror movements or simply rest beside you. Try poses like downward dog, gentle lunges, or seated breathing while scratching your pup’s ears. The calm energy benefits both of you — lowering stress, improving flexibility, and strengthening connection.

🍗 Move Mindfully After Meals

Just like us, dogs benefit from gentle movement after eating. Instead of lying down right away, go for a slow indoor walk, or toss a toy a few times to aid digestion. (And yes — that applies to humans, too. A slow walk after a big meal can do wonders for your own tummy!)

🌟 Keep the Joy in Motion

Staying active indoors is less about burning calories and more about maintaining rhythm and routine. During the holidays, our dogs feed off our moods and energy. If you make space for movement, they will too. Keep it light, fun, and cozy — and celebrate every stretch and wag along the way.

Stay tuned for Day 9 of our 25 Days of Christmas with Your Dog series!

Winter Effects on Your Dog’s Weight

Winter Effects on Your Dog’s Weight: Why It Happens and How to Help Winter can be a challenging season for dogs — from icy walks to long, lazy days indoors. But did you know that cold weather can also affect your dog’s weight? When the snow starts to fall and temperatures drop, many of us notice changes in our dogs — from lower energy to dry skin. One change that can sneak up on pet parents is weight fluctuation . Dogs may gain or lose weight in the winter depending on their activity level, metabolism, and environment. Understanding these seasonal shifts can help you keep your pup at a healthy weight year-round. A brisk winter walk can help your dog maintain a healthy weight. 🐾 Why Dogs May Gain Weight in Winter Less activity: Cold weather and shorter days often mean fewer walks, shorter playtimes, and less overall movement. Extra calories: Many owners add “comfort foods” or extra treats during the holidays, leading to calorie overload. Indoor l...

Why the 80/10/10 Raw Food Ratio Isn’t Always Enough for Dogs — and How We Can Do Better

Why the 80/10/10 Raw Food Ratio Isn’t Always Enough for Dogs — and How We Can Do Better If you’ve been in the raw feeding world for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard of the 80/10/10 model — 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, and 10% organ. It’s simple, easy to remember, and feels close to what a “whole prey” meal might look like. But as more feeders (and even nutritionists) dig deeper, we’re learning that the 80/10/10 ratio might be more of a starting point than a perfect formula. A recent article on RawFeederLife made that point beautifully — and it’s worth exploring why it matters for our dogs’ long-term health. The 80/10/10 Rule Was Inspired by Nature… But It’s Not the Whole Story The idea behind 80/10/10 was to mimic a natural prey animal — a rabbit, bird, or rodent — and what a wild canine would eat if it caught one. The problem? Most of us aren’t feeding entire prey animals. Even if you’re sourcing great ingredients, chances are you’re missing a few thi...
